Two weeks from now Ted Chiang and I are doing an appearance at the Olympia Timberland Library in Olympia, Washington. Nothing unusual about that -- talk a little, read a little, maybe present a mini-panel. This one, however, promises to be a bit different.
They have a band, "Mutoid Men" (link to their latest release: rumbletowne.com/rtr/rtr-releases/RTR-008 ). They have a second musician, Spiritual Successor, with songs about "suicidal superheroes and terminally ill space babies." There is a Sci-Fi Trivia Throwdown. Last year there was also a fashion show, but they've dropped that. Here is this year's poster:
I'm not sure what to expect from all this. Certainly not the usual library appearance, which tends to be a decorous and staid affair. Stay tuned.

People can still come in costume and win a prize, but there's no official fashion show this year. Spiritual Successor is a supergroup that was created specifically for this event by local barber and writer Zach Mandeville (http://funwaterawesome.com/)- I have heard that there will be flute. It's going to be great!
